Default DarkFall, a great new MMO

Mods: apologies in advance, just wanted to get some exposure for this, I know it should be in Off-Topic

Response from the new mod, NINJA: If you want to lure people away from the heaven that is Guild Wars, use the OT forum. Moved.

Check out this new MMO: DarkFall

It's a real time MMO like GuildWars that has a good PvP and PvE. It is set in a vast persistent world, IIRC the final install will be about 6 GB or more. You can conquer cities and raid castles, there is mounted combat and dual weilding and no character levelling (although you build proficiency in skills). Player skill is important. There is a very impressive list of features in the game and you should check out their main page and the quote below. There is a strong PvP system which is everywhere not just in arenas. There is plenty for the PvE lover to do also, with a lot of freedom in creating your own weapons and a good trading system IIRC. There are also NPC traders. There will also be about 1000 skills of which about 500 have already been developed. You can also have clan alignments and there is an in-game clan-page system. There is good communication with the Devs and they have official forums of their own. Yes this game caught our eye because it has so many features that we would have liked to have seen in GW and that we have been looking for in a game. It also lets you get the best of both worlds (PvE and PvP) while you could do either as your main focus.

Guild Karma have been selected to enter the beta testing that is to begin soon. We will need to populate a city so we need skilled PvPers, farmers, crafters, explorers, traders, etc. To apply to join our clan, see my sig for a link to our forums and make a post in the Membership Application section. The DarkFall staff are managing how many people will be allowed into the beta and the selection process. Individual players will be selected for the beta too, so the game could suit you if you like that. Browse or join their forums at http://forums.darkfallonline.com/

Read a review about it here:

Check out the DarkFall Clan List here.

An early PvP video can be found here.

Interesting info from a question and answer session
Quote:
Will I need to level?
There is no leveling in Darkfall. Our advancement system is 100% skill based. If you want to learn to use the sword for example, you pick up the swordsmanship skill by learning it from an NPC or from another player and you advance this skill with use. You become a better swordsman over time and with practice, by actually using your sword while hunting or in combat.

Will Darkfall have safe zones?
There are no safe zones in Darkfall unless the players themselves create them or seek them out. There is no area where a player cannot be attacked by another player.

There is relative safety in numbers and in staying out of harm’s way. A player in a city full of his clanmates and further guarded by NPC guards is as safe as he can be, but he is still vulnerable to a sudden enemy raid. A player who has made a home for himself in a remote area is also relatively safe, but an enemy could always come along. The six racial capitals are very well guarded and will probably be the safest locations on Agon. Someone could still attack you, but he would probably die in the process.

Is Darkfall a Player vs. Player (PvP) game?
Calling Darkfall a PvP game would be selling it short. Of course there’s going to be a lot of PvP combat and the combat gameplay will be as fast paced and fun as a first person shooter, but the focus of the game is kingdom building, clan warfare, and conquest. The battles will be epic and will require a lot more than just PvP skill to be won. Darkfall is as much a social, a real-time strategy, and a fantasy role playing game, as it is a PvP game.

How are you going to handle Player Killing?
Anyone can attack anyone. In fact Darkfall encourages you to seek out and kill enemies of your race and your clan. However, it is up to each kingdom to set the rules of their borders. The different kingdoms have NPC guards that have orders given to them by the player kings and lords. You can order the guards to attack on sight. The guard “hit list” can include clan names, individual player names, specific races, alignments, and enemies.

What are the Prestige classes?
Prestige classes are special classes, like Paladin, Assassin, Gladiator, Enchanter etc. and it’s an optional path that you may choose for your character to follow. Picking a prestige class will in most cases give you a few special skills, a few special spells, and you will have a certain status. There are limitations, tradeoffs and restrictions playing a prestige class character. Druids for example may never use metal armor after they are initiated, and Paladins have to give half of their earnings to their church.

Prestige classes may be interesting to some players, and some classes may give you an extra reason to role-play, or maybe give you an edge in combat or crafting. There will be many interesting prestige classes for you to try out.

Picking a prestige class is not final - you can change class later, with some minor penalties. The easy route would have been to make picking a prestige class final, but we want to keep Darkfall as open ended as possible.

Will there be player owned houses?
Players will be able to set up houses of various sizes and design, ranging from small cottages to huge castles and citadels.

Can I design my own house?
Yes you can.

How many skills and spells will Darkfall have?
We will have as many as we can possibly add before the game launch. We currently have about 300 skills and 200 spells designed on paper, but we are hoping to get at least 500 skills and 500 spells in there before retail.

Do you have skill caps?
Yes, skills start at one and cap at 100.

Can players make magical items?
Darkfall features an extremely sophisticated item creator, which will enable players to create powerful items, like weapons, jewelry, armor, wands, potions, food and more.
We have invested a lot of time and design resources into creating the ultimate player based economy. Players who enjoy trading and crafting will truly enjoy Darkfall’s virtually limitless item creator system, something never before seen in a MMORPG.

Do I have to join a Clan?
Darkfall can be played any way you want. If you want to get involved in conquest, wars, and ruling kingdoms, you join a clan, or get together with some friends and start your own, but you do not have to.

How are clans structured and organized?
The Clan leader can assign ranks to those below him ranging from recruits up to top level commanders. He can also assign rights (a huge list) to ranks as needed and customize the guild structure (recruitment rights - website update rights)

Will Darkfall have universal banks?
It will be tested in alpha and beta. We like the idea that if you deposit a longsword in a bank, you have to go back to the exact same bank to withdraw it. However this might prove too annoying in the long run, and as with everything else, we have to consider gameplay issues vs. realism.

How will trading work?
We have developed a pretty sophisticated trading system that brings buyers and sellers together easily, and it will work in, but also out of the game. There will be more on this at a later date.

Can I have pets or NPC hirelings in Darkfall?
You can have pets and NPC hirelings in Darkfall, ranging from tamed animals and monsters, to summoned skeletons, charmed animals and monsters, hired NPC merchants, hired NPC guards, etc.

What can my NPC hirelings do?
NPC hirelings can follow you around and fight with you, they can carry your loot, they can perform skills and spells to aid you, etc. NPC hirelings can do pretty much everything that player friends can do. In addition, NPC hirelings can be given advanced orders such as patrolling your city, looking for enemies, criminals, and thieves. They can be a vendor in your shop that you have set up, they can mine for minerals in a mine, they can go out into the forest and chop wood for you, or stand on the banks of a river fishing for you all day.

Racial wars?
Yes. Darkfall has six different main character races: Elves, Dwarves, Humans, Mahirim, Orks and Alfar. Each race has different political standings with the other races. The Elves are at peace with Dwarves and Humans, but are wary of Mahirim, and are at war with the Orks. Everyone hates the Alfar, and the Alfar hate everyone. In effect this means that Elven players may travel to Dwarven and Human cities without having any problems with the city guards, and may buy and sell in stores. If an Elven player traveled to an Orkish city, he would be killed on sight, both by city guards and other players. In Alfar cities, any other race is attacked.

Do I need to spend half my life playing this game to be any good?
Playing a lot will help you develop a stronger character, it will help you to improve your character handling skills, and it will familiarize you better with the world and the way it works. However, this game is not all about individual skill, and there will be a skill cap so characters can develop up to a point. There are many elements that come into play in Darkfall, and a casual player can have as much fun playing the game, and possibly be more successful than a hard core gamer, in some fields.

Does Darkfall have in-game bulletin boards?
Yes it does.

What kind of Clan Support will you have available?
We will feature clan pages on the official Darkfall site, we will offer in game bulletin boards for clan use and the best in-game and out of game clan communication and administration tools ever seen in an online game.

Do you have any features that can help players find groups?
Yes we do, through the in-game bulletin boards and in-game clan pages.

What kind of communication system will the game offer?
We have designed a custom communications system for Darkfall which works whether your character is logged in the game or not.
Good beta testers will help this game turn out as best as it can. I hope you get in

Q. How much will Darkfall cost to play?
A. It hasn't been stated official yet but based on costs of other MMOs $50 for the software and $10-13 a month would be a reasonable estimation.
No thanks; I'm not paying twice for any game, no matter how good it is/will be. Wish them luck though.

It's very unprofesional, they should make it 20 dollar, no monthly fee.

Looks like it could be interesting, but there's no way in hell I'm going to pay a monthly fee for something when you've got the second chapter of GW coming out next year.

LOL I guess it would appeal to PvPers more but I posted here at Guru since there are roles for people who like to make weapons, collect materials, own monsters, build hoses and otherwise populate the cities.

The first round of selections from clans are done so anyone who wanted to get in might get in for later stages of beta. The DarkFall staff are in charge of this procedure.

I'm not into monthly fees but I'm going to test it out during beta to see if I would pay monthly for it. So I see where you're all coming from on that point. Thanks for looking

Monthly fees are not HORRIBLE. The way I see it, when I played EQ and FFXI back in the day was that I never needed another game really. Let alone I barely play video games. It saves me from wasting money on crappy console games that turn out to be dissapointing. Sounds like an interesting game to me, ill have to check out how it develops seeing as video games have taken a backseat in my life. Rarely will I see a game as must have now.

I have a guild that's on their list, no word yet whether we'll get a chance at BETA but that may be as far as I decide to go based on several things:

1. I don't think it looks all the great from a graphics standpoint (sorry I'm a snob like that ) After seeing what SWG was able to do with details/graphics in a huge game..it spoiled me Foeva
2. The monthly fee thing..just aint my bag - SWG was the last fee based MMO I may ever play.
3. Chapter 2 is coming and I still enjoy GW

If they sold the game for $30 and 1 million copies where sold thats 30 million dollars for them. Now if you had no monthly fee's how would this kill the company at all? I doubt it would, seems to me they just are out for pure greed of money.

Like WoW, $50 for a game and $10 a month.... Like comon now, thet make enough as it is from WC3, SC/BW, ect...

So I wouldn't pay to play for it either, GW for life!

I have no problem with a monthly fee; I have a problem with paying up to $50 up front for a coaster that earns me only the "privilege" of paying another $15 a month to actually play it. I'll pay up front or I'll pay a monthly fee but I'm not paying both - that's just greedy and no game is worth it.
